Today was the second day of state testing in Minnesota. MCAs are brutal to my students. First, let’s look at the frustration factor. My kids have learning disabilities. Let’s throw a test in front of them and expect them to perform at or above grade level. Really?!?!? Then, let’s look at the average attention span of any child in society these days. Then, again, let’s throw a three hour testing time at the beginning of their day. Then, let’s look at the world of education today. Best practices say to actively involve your students, keep things moving, engaging, and relevant. Who lectures anymore? Kids don’t sit still in classrooms anymore (thank the Lord!). Teachers are constantly shaking things up, using different strategies, differentiating instruction, and actively involving students in lessons. So, again, let’s throw a three hour testing block at them and expect them to concentrate on the task at hand….for 3 hours!!!!!

Ok, I’ll let that go for now since that isn’t the purpose of this post.

My purpose… Good old fashioned fun.

My students were fried after testing, so another teacher and I took our kids out for a walk to rejuvenate them a bit. We walked around to the back of the building. We let them run through the football field. We noticed some other kids playing kickball, and then realized it was another class from our department, so we crashed the kickball game.

Our kids took the field and never looked back.

You should have seen the smiles, heard the laughs, and just watched these kids have plain, good, old-fashioned fun.

I took the kids out to be rejuvenated, but I think I was the one who was rejuvenated…this is why I went into teaching. The fun.

Testing is not fun.

Watching my kids struggle through the test was not fun.

Teaching is fun.

Watching my kids be kids… Running through the grass, playing kickball, laughing and enjoying the game… now that was real fun!

Over here we have the Sats at the age of 7 (a 3 hour exam) 11 (five and a hlfish hours all together ) and 14 (seven hours altogether)
This year finally teachers have said enough is enough. they will be boycotting the Key stage 2 exams. a 3 hour exam for a seven year old is way too much! I’ve known children having to see doctor because they are so stressed and that they are being sick with nerves at 7 years old in the lead up to the exams! I’ve seen children come home distraut because they think their life will be ruined at 7 years old because they don think thy have done very well in exams that really wont matter in a couple of years time. Its ridiculous!
Why they feel the need to test to this extreme I will never know. Before they leave school children in the uk will have gone through four major sets of exams. starting at seven years old and finishing when they are 16. I think its madness putting children under this much pressure. No wonder children grow up way too quick.
Good for you for letting them play! Its a pity that this is an unusual occurance these days rather than a run of the mill event like it was when I was at school!

Same here. I remember going out to play kickball during the school day (and not just in phy ed class)… it was aways so much fun to see our teachers in a different light and to just have fun. A great stress reliever!

Man, that is a whole lot of testing!!!! Yikes! That is insane!

tell me about it. We were talking about it the other day whilst waiting for our children to finish. So many parents are against them. I appreciate that teachers have to assess children but how can yu honestly test a 7 year olds understanding in a huge hall under a timer and in total silence? So much pressure for such tiny shoulders!
Anyway. Its the weekend!!!! Wahooo! Have a good one!

Let me know what you’re thinkin’!
