Reading Adventures

I have been reading two amazing books over break.   One is The Shack by William P. Young.   Multiple people have asked me if I had read it, and my aunt gave it to me for Christmas.   When people described it to me, I thought, “No way, not going to enjoy it.”   I love a good novel.  I love stories, and when I heard this one was about God, I thought I’d never like it.

But, the story is fascinating.  It makes you really think about what you believe in and makes you see many “A-ha” moments about what life is.

I won’t go too  in depth about this, as I am not finished……I have a few more chapters left.  Just wanted to tell you that I have been enjoying it.

The other book I read was Rush Home Road by Lori Lansens.  I couldn’t put it down.   I stayed up late at night to read while I was home at my parents’ house.  What a beautifully written book with powerfully well written characters.   This is a book that I just keep coming back to in my thoughts this week.

The main character, Addy Shadd, is so real and so down to earth, that you just fall in love with her and are intrigued by the story she has to tell.  The book runs you through the ringer as far as emotions go.  I love books like this!

I really must try to re-find time to do more reading this year… I try to justify it by saying it is a good example for the children to see, but it really is an indulgence that I have been struggling to afford of late 😦

We’re doing a book study of The Shack at the church this winter. I, too, have put off reading it. In my experience books that are “popular” that are about God tend to be too simplistic or legalistic or fundamentalist. I suppose I need to read it soon, though! Glad you liked it, that’s encouraging.

It can be simplistic in parts……and some “yada yada yada” moments, but overall, I liked it as a story. I think I may ask our pastor her thoughts on it and maybe we could do something with it.

I am glad to see that you read this book. When my mom gave it to me to read she told me it changed how she prayed. I was skeptical. We read different kinds of things. I thought it was a quick read and had some really beautiful moments. I had a tear or two while reading the story. If nothing else, it made me consider my relationships a bit. I walked the kids to school one day and wondered if I was acting in a way that was in loving relationship with them…(one of them was whining about something and I wasn’t being very tolerant of the whining voice) I stopped for a moment and tried to figure out how to teach the lesson of using a strong voice without the aggravation in my own voice.

Let me know what you’re thinkin’!
