Come again?

I open my email at school this morning and read an email from Teacher Created Resources about the new things in October. The email ends with Dates to remember during the month:

Dates to Remember
October 4: Sputnik orbited Earth, 1957
October 9: Leif Ericson discovered America, 1000
October 15: U.S. Department of Transportation established, 1966
October 28: Statue of Liberty dedicated, 1886
October 31: Halloween

Birthdays
October 13: Revolutionary War Heroine Molly Pitcher, 1754
October 11: First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, 1884
October 16: Lexicographer Noah Webster, 1758
October 20: Scientist Sir James Chadwick, 1891
October 27: President Teddy Roosevelt, 1858

WHAT?!?!?!? What the hell happened to Columbus Day? Has someone mentioned to his family that we don’t celebrate him coming to America in 1492? Leif Erickson?!?!?!?!??! Come on! Bring back Chris!

Oh, but Chris is quite controversial these days. There were huge protests of Columbus day when I was in college, complete with chalk body outlines on the sidewalks. Pathetic.

On my calendar, October 8th is “Indigenous Peoples’ Day.” Neither Chris nor Leif “discovered America.” There were communities and cultures here long before anyone from Europe showed up.

    Happy October!

I have Columbus Day on my calendar but that doesn’t mean it’s right. Most history books were written from a ‘white’ point of view anyway. Didn’t the Native Americans discover America since they were already living here before we ripped it out from under them? I want to know where Jeanne got her calendar because I like how they signify the days in hers.
