a question…

I am a special education advocate.   I work with students with disabilities of all sorts, and I love it.  However, at what point is it NOT ok for some of these kids to be at a public school.  Let me explain.   (Usually, I hear people say  this and I JUMP DOWN THEIR THROATS with numerous reasons as to why these kids have the right to a public education).  I just got back from driving a colleague’s car home for her while our principal drove her home in his car.  This morning, one of our kids with autism flipped out for the umpteenth time this year.  He had one of our colleagues with a phone chord wrapped around her neck while he was kicking and screaming and hitting another one of my colleagues.  Both were brought to the emergency room.  One’s neck was severely strained and the other’s wrist is so swollen  they can’t even tell if it’s broken.   That colleague got 40 Vicadin pills and the rest of the afternoon off. This child has grabbed, hit, bruised MULTIPLE staff members on any given day.   When do we draw the line?   Aren’t there special homes for these types of kids?  How is our safety or the safety of other kids taken into consideration?

I’m with you. I’m always defending – but yesterday – that was just not ok. And a kid w/o a disability would have been hauled off in handcuffs – and probably charges would have been brought up.

Amen, Sister! Did you know that the student is back in school today??????? How unacceptable is that! He didn’t get ANY consequences, as the district told administration that they could not suspend him! WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Let me know what you’re thinkin’!
